Expect the Unexpected
The treatment for a snake bite, or perhaps a bat, is not an unexpected occurrence in Liberia. However, Bats and snakes as waiting room visitors? That’s not what one usually expects. But in Liberia, I’ve learned to expect the unexpected!
I can’t see the above video without thinking about the opening scene from the old Scooby Doo cartoon (the original one, not the cheesy ones that came later.) These bats are flying, and I guess feeding, over the waiting room of the Methodist Hospital in Ganta, Liberia. While waiting for the doctor to show up to check on Prince, I not only captured these critters… but another as well. The second was more up close and personal… and possibly more dangerous. A snake that the Liberians call “Cobra Ma” came slithering through the benches we were all sitting on. It gets its name from their belief that its poison is stronger than the Cobra. That may be, but I’ve been up close and personal with quite a few Cobras here… and I must say they are far more intimidating! Regardless, there is always something going on here… expect the unexpected!
